The Advent Calendar Phenomenon

As children we all loved advent calendars. Mine were quite modest, made of paper with the addition of glitter, I suspect glass glitter, which really is exquisite. They were designed to put over the window so no chocolate included, just pure whimsy and the expectation of Christmas to follow.

I know this may be a little early for many of you to get your head around, but I am BIG on getting certain tasks out of the way to make room and more time as Christmas draws near. Lets face it, there is never enough time! We can tell ourselves we've got this, but really, do we? I will leave that thought with you to ponder.

Fast forward a few decades and advent calendars have rocketed into their own stratosphere. You have the breathtaking Dior, Tiffany, and Diptyque calendars, setting our hearts aflutter - not to mention there is a calendar for everything, including our fluffy friends. Although my pets never got one, I of course always want one but struggle to ever buy one for myself. They are indeed beautiful, but tend to be rather costly, and quite often I’m aware that I simply don’t want all of the items inside them.

This year I decided to create my own calendar - I already had the box which I purchased from Potterybarn a few years ago. I painted it black to highlight whatever is placed inside, and used a combination of book pages and silver foil paper to wrap the gifts. The numbers are printed from one of the resources pages (on my website). I like to use the same ribbon throughout to keep consistency, and the gleaming silver adds a pretty distraction after the gifts have been removed from the box. You could choose to gift silver, but that’s entirely your decision.

A stylist’s tip… just make sure your advent calendar complements your chosen theme as it needs to fit seamlessly with your decorations and colours. That said, I guess I have revealed my Christmas colours for this year!
